Canadian Federal Government Pledges $56M for 199 Affordable Rental Homes in Edmonton

Project Overview

The Canadian federal government, in partnership with Rohit Group and Covenant, has announced over $56 million in funding to build 199 secure rental homes in Edmonton. The announcement was made by Caroline Desrochers, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, alongside Matt Jeneroux, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend.

• Tenant lounges

The homes will be located close to schools, a city recreation centre, restaurants and cafes, retail, and public transportation. The site is adjacent to Covenant’s new Stelmach Community Health Centre, which provides a broad range of outpatient and specialized health services.

Broader Significance

This project is part of the federal government’s broader efforts to respond to Canada’s housing crisis. Through Build Canada Homes, the government is working to increase the pace of affordable homebuilding and fight homelessness by building transitional and supportive housing in partnership with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities.

The new homes will be part of the broader Covenant Wellness Community, bringing health care, housing, community services and other supports together in one location. This integrated, community-based model is designed to better connect people with the care and supports they need to live well.

Funding Source

The project is funded primarily through the federal government’s Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP), an important housing finance initiative under the Department of Housing and Infrastructure focused on supporting middle-class and affordable housing development.
